Trekking in the Otún Basin

This journey begins in the Potosí sector, entrance to the Los Nevados National Natural Park, municipality of Villamaría, Caldas.

This journey begins in the Potosí sector, at the entrance to Los Nevados National Natural Park in the municipality of Villamaría, Caldas. The route offers a magnificent view of the Otún Lagoon, the Condor Valley, and the national park. Fortunately, thanks to the geographical layout, we will be able to cross the departments of Caldas and Risaralda, where on the last day, we will descend along the Otún River basin within the jurisdiction of the city of Pereira and the municipality of Santa Rosa de Cabal.

Itinerary / Daily Schedule

Day 1. 4:00 AM

The meeting will be at 4:00 am in Pereira or Manizales, then we will travel to the Potosí sector in a 4×4 vehicle where we will have breakfast, afterwards we will begin the hike through the páramo ecosystem, Otún lagoon and high Andean forest that will take us to the El Jordán farm. Potosí – El Jordán (20 km – approx. 9 hrs.)

Day 2.

We will have breakfast very early, pack our backpacks and begin the descent towards El Cedral through the wooded basin of the Otún River. This place will offer us many landscapes, birds and waterfalls, but above all, concentration to descend its rocky path and reach El Cedral where a delicious lunch will be waiting for us and afterwards we will return to the city of Pereira. The Jordan – The Cedral (14 km – approx. 7 hrs.)
